McGillis grew up in a close-knit family with two sisters and a brother. McGillis’s parents, Virginia Joan and Donald Manson McGillis were doctors who strongly influenced their daughter’s early life. Her father was a surgeon, and her mother worked as a nurse. The family was relatively affluent, and they spent summers in Canada, where they owned a lakefront cottage.
